Conversion Factors

During a typical chemistry (or science in general) course you will often need to convert one unit into another unit. This is a fundamental skill that all science types need to know. Here are many conversion factors which are often referred to as unit factors. It doesn't hurt a bit to memorize a few of them. But do know, we will always provide a table like this on each an every exam where conversions are necessary.

Pressure

1 atm = 760 torr

= 760 mm of Hg

= 101325 Pa

= 14.7 psi

1 bar = 100000 Pa

1 bar = .987 atm

Mass

1 lb = 453.6 g

1 lb = 0.4536 kg

1 lb = 16 oz

1 kg = 2.205 lbs

1 ton = 2000 lbs

1 tonne = 1000 kg

Length

1 in = 2.54 cm

1 ft = 12 in

1 yd = 3 ft

1 mi = 5280 ft

1 mi = 1.609 km

1 Å = 10-10 m

Energy

1 cal = 4.184 J

1 L·atm = 101.325 J

1 eV = 1.602 × 10-19 J

1 C·V = 1 J

1 kWh = 3600 kJ

Volume

1 L = 1000 mL

1 L = 1000 cm3

1 L = 0.2642 gal

1 gal = 3.785 L

1 gal = 231 in3

1 gal = 128 fl oz

1 gal = 4 qts

1 gal = 8 pints

1 cup = 8 fl oz

1 cup = 1/2 pint

1 shot = 1.5 oz

1 fl oz = 29.57 mL

1 tbsp ≈ 15 mL

1 tsp ≈ 5 mL

Power

1 W = 1 J/s
